Art Curriculum Intent
At Southfield Park, we value Art as a form of creative expression that allows children to experiment, invent and be innovative to create their own works of art, craft and design. The Art curriculum should challenge children to think critically and develop ideas as well as equipping them with the knowledge and skills to develop a rigorous understanding of art and design in a range of forms: drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
Children learn skills sequentially in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space to plan, design, make and evaluate their own artwork. Ideas are developed and recorded in sketchbooks and these are revisited to modify and improve their work. Skills are developed towards final pieces of art and craft where children have the freedom to select from a range of media, choose the scale of their work and also given the opportunity to work independently or collaboratively.
Using the work of artists, craft makers and designers inspires children’s own ideas as well as an understanding of the historical and cultural development of art forms. Artists are chosen to reflect a broad range of periods, styles and media, representing different cultural influences. Oracy skills are promoted within art and children are equipped with the language to talk about their likes and dislikes when appraising their own work, the work of their peers as well as the work of established artists.
The Art curriculum is enriched by providing opportunities to visit galleries and take part in art projects within school and the local community, such as the Epsom Art Festival, The Big Draw and workshops provided by local secondary schools.
