Computing: Curriculum Intent
At Southfield Park, the Computing curriculum equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and communicate in the world they live in. Computing links with Maths, Science and Design Technology are exploited to show the inter-related nature of the disciplines. Our curriculum is organised into five strands: E-safety, programming, handling data, multimedia and technology in our lives. The key skills and knowledge build sequentially and are taught in Computing lessons and practised in the wider curriculum, enabling children to make links in their learning. In following our Computing curriculum, the children learn the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Our curriculum ensures that pupils become digitally literate, able to use and develop their ideas through information and communication technology, so that they are prepared for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. During their time at Southfield Park, children develop their skills and knowledge through a broad range of practical activities, with opportunities to build, program, experiment, debug and evaluate, developing from using programmable toys in the early years of the school to computer aided design in Year 5 and 6. The curriculum, alongside key annual events, ensures that pupils are responsible and competent users of information and communication technology. Children are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, recognising acceptable and unacceptable behaviour and identifying a range of ways to report concerns.
